Day & A Dream plans to make your March even more Maddening with the second round of the Crunk Bracket / #CrunkBracket.
Our staff remembers the “Crunk” Era fondly – some with fonder memories than others – and that period from the late ’90s into the early 2000’s was responsible for some of the most memorable hip-hop songs ever. But we got to thinking: while there are many amazing Crunk Anthems, was it possible to choose just ONE to serve as the Greatest Crunk Anthem of All Time? Hence, The #CrunkBracket was born. Over the next week, Day & A Dream is enlisting the help of our followers and supporters (by way of Twitter poll) to eliminate a Crunk Anthem one by one until one remains standing.

Yesterday, voting began with the Round of 40 (the original Crunk Bracket was amended with 8 songs due to DJ Wally Sparks’ deserved demand that Memphis get properly credited). With one day in the books, we move on to the #TrillTwenty of the Crunk Bracket. Once again, voting opens at 10 AM EST and runs til 10 PM EST. In case you missed it, here’s what happened on Day One:
Texas/Louisiana Region
(1) Wipe Me Down d. (8) Girlfight
Foxx, Boosie and Webbie made short work of Brooke Valentine’s fight song, coasting to the second round with ease.
(2) Mo. City Don d. (7) Back Back
Houston’s self-proclaimed Fat Rat Wit’ Da Cheese, Lil’ O, was no match for Z-Ro’s anthemic freestyle.
(3) Down 4 My Niggaz d. 6) Southside da Realest
We thought that by seeding two songs from Dallas’s Big Tuck separately – versus pitting them against each other – at least ONE of them would survive. C-Murder and Snoop swiftly got rid of “Southside” and we were sad.
(5) Like A Pimp d. (4) Tussle
I take that back – we were REALLY sad that “Tussle,” the Texas-made fight in the club anthem lost to David Banner and Lil’ Flip! Like… how?! What’s wrong with you people?! “Tussle” really only got 23% of the vote. Like…
Lil’ Jon Region
(1) What You Gon’ Do d. (8) Get Crunk
The 8th-seeded “Get Crunk” actually put up a decent fight against its Crunk Juice album mate (55% to 45% was the final margin), but in the end, Lil’ Jon and Lil’ Scrappy advanced.
(2) I Don’t Give A F*ck d. (7) F.I.L.A.
Lil’ Jon’s “IDGAF” featuring Mystikal and friends took precedence over Jon’s ode to the city of Atlanta.
(3) Bia’ Bia d. (6) Let’s Go
Lil’ Jon’s posse cut with Ludacris, Chyna Whyte, and more promptly got Jon’s collab with Trick Daddy and Twista out of the way.
(4) Put Yo’ Hood Up d. (5) Damn!
Apparently, representing for your neighborhood in the ATL was much more popular than the Youngbloodz’s club anthem.
“Hands” Region
(1) “We Ready” d. (8) “Dem Boyz”
Not even a feature from Young Jeezy and the backing of Sean Combs could save Boyz N The Hood’s breakout single from the behemoth that was Archie Eversole’s “We Ready.”
(2) “Move (B*tch)” d. (7) “I Smoke, I Drank”
Ludacris, I-20, and co. coasted to victory with their half-curse out the traffic, half-get out my way cut, making short work of the Body Head Bangerz’s biggest single.
(3) “Never Scared” d. (6) “Stilettos (Pumps)”
Our readers felt a proper stomping required proper footwear, and sided with Bone Crusher, T.I., and Killer Mike over Crime Mob.
(5) “No Problems” d. (4) “This Tha City”
Pastor Troy of Atlanta may have a helluva following, but the preacher with an attitude was laid to rest easily by Lil’ Scrappy and Lil’ Jon’s gritty banger.
Florida-GA Line Region
(1) “Knuck If You Buck” d. (8) “Presidential”
The Youngbloodz’s slightly prophetic (now that we’ve had a crunk Black President) single stood no chance against Crime Mob’s “Knuck If You Buck,” which is a favorite to win it all.
(7) “Naan” d. (2) “White Tee”
In what may be the biggest upset of the tourney thus far, Trick Daddy, Deuce Bobbito, and Trina put the 305 on their backs and cruised to victory over Dem Franchize Boyz’s ode to the triple-extra-large that went down to your knee caps.
(6) “Neva Eva” d. (3) “Head Bussa”
Technically, Lil’ Scrappy still won: though “Head Bussa” stood no chance against “Neva Eva,” Scrappy actually features on Trillville’s second-most memorable single (the first, of course, being “Some Cut”).
(5) “Shut Up” d. (4) “Tear da Club Up ’97”
DJ Wally Sparks chose to add Three 6 Mafia’s “Tear Da Club Up ’97” to his Memphis bracket, so Trick Daddy’s “Shut Up” (in all of its HBCU Marching Band funk glory) survived and advanced due to disqualification.
All-Memphis Region
(1) “Tear da Club Up ’97” d. (8) “Nobody”
Case in point: Playa Fly’s “Nobody,” beloved as it is, was steamrolled by Three 6 Mafia in the opening round.
(2) “Stay Fly” d. (7) “Sho’ Nuff”
Tela’s “Sho’ Nuff” cut is still very, very smooth, and very, very Memphis. Unfortunately, it wasn’t smooth enough to offset the ratchet greatness that is The Most Known Unknowns’ “Stay Fly” single.
(6) “Slob On My Knob” d. (3) “You Don’t Want Drama/Don’t Make Me”
8Ball & MJG’s “You Don’t Want Drama” is classic thumping Memphis funk. It was filth over funk for our voters, however, as Tear Da Club Thugs’ “Slob On My Knob” proved much more timeless, or at least much more crunk.
(4) “Who Run It?” d. (5) “Lay It Down”
We’d hoped that 8Ball & MJG might at least make it to the #TrillTwenty. But no – “Lay It Down,” too, was no match for Three 6 Mafia’s boastful”Who Run It?” cut.
The Trill 20
In what would normally be our “Sweet 16,” the Trill 20 happens to boast arguably a final matchup worth talking about in the TEX / LA Region. Plus, can anybody unseat “Knuck If You Buck” from the top spot in the “Hands” region? Let’s breakdown the Trill 20 matchups.
